In this day and age, you can never be too careful. The other week, I was driving back from working out when I saw that there was a huge accident. Later, I found out that a person walking along the sidewalk had been struck by a motorcyclist who had somehow lost control of his vehicle and had skidded onto the sidwalk. How scary is that? To think that we aren’t even safe walking along the sidewalks! Is it because the speed limits are too high or too low? The fact of the matter is that people who get behind the wheel of a car, truck, bus or even a motorcycle don’t always obey the posted traffic speed limits- let alone the laws of the roadways.

What is the point of having laws and rules that govern how we should behave as responsible citizens if no one follows them? Can we really be left to our own devices to trust one another’s judgment? Think about it. If there were no rules for how we should drive, do you think that people would do the right thing? Would it be total chaos? It is a scary thought. There are, however, some precautions that we can each take when it comes to sharing the road. As a runner, I would always get annoyed when cars would cut me off as I tried to cross the street. To put it another way, when you are behind the wheel of a vehicle, put yourself in the shoes of a pedestrian. As many of us are already aware, pedestrians always have the right of way (even when they’re wrong). This is, in part, because vehicles can be used as deadly weapons and are much bigger and heavier than a person. When you approach a corner and there is a pedestrian, always pause to see what their body language indicates. You may have the green arrow to turn, but if a pedestrian’s body language indicates that they are already moving forward, then you must yield.

It is also a great idea to try to make eye contact with pedestrians when you are approaching a stopped position or even an intersection. Usually, pedestrians will look for this same eye contact from you and will give some sort of a verbal or physical signal indicating that they understand your intentions for them to move ahead or stay where they are. If we all practiced a little more safety both in our driving habits as well as how we treat pedestrians, then it would be a much safer place to live and work in. Remember, when you’re not behind the wheel of a car, you become a pedestrian. That being said, make sure that you treat pedestrians the way that you would want to be treated: with respect and courtesy!

The Samsung i8910 HD is the latest high-end smartphone from Samsung. But can it cut it against two of its toughest rivals: the Nokia N97 and the HTC Magic? Let’s find out.

Interface

The Samsung i8910 HD uses the new Symbian Touch OS, but like any self-respecting phone, it has its own custom interface on top of that: TouchWiz, a finger-friendly, touch-based UI built around widgets, such as weather apps, or contact shortcuts. However, it’s not just the Samsung i8910 HD, because the phones in this shootout are built along similar lines. The Nokia N97, in fact, also uses Symbian, making the two phones very similar in terms of underlying OS. However, the Nokia N97 doesn’t have the same flair of the Samsung i8910 HD. If we’re talking flair, then the HTC Magic is a far more worthy contender, with its Google Android interface. Again, the front end is customisable with widgets, much like the i8910 HD, but with extensions of the home screen on either side, reached by a simple swipe across the HTC Magic’s screen. That makes the HTC Magic’s interface a lot more expandable, but to counter that, the Samsung i8910 HD interface is far prettier.

Internet and Online Tools

With all three phones using HSDPA, internet is exceptional across them all, and all three have superb web browsers. Both the HTC Magic and the Nokia N97 have aces up their sleeves, though, as they both have dedicated online app stores. The HTC Magic has the Android Marketplace, and the Nokia N97 has its Ovi Store, both of which make downloading extra software incredibly easy. That’s not to say that the Samsung i8910 HD won’t have extra software available (it is, after all, Symbian-based, and Symbian apps are readily available), but unlike the other two, it’s not as easy to get software instantly on the device, no matter where you are. However, the Nokia N97 also wins out in the internet arena by having a full, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, something neither the Samsung i8910 HD or HTC Magic have. That’s going to make entering web addresses and even things like instant messaging vastly easier.

Camera

As things stand at the moment, the three phones are pretty evenly matched. The Nokia N97 certainly shows more promise in the second category, due to its combination of the Ovi Store AND a full keyboard. The HTC Magic also has the benefit of an app store, and a marginally more expandable and functional interface (although the i8910 HD has the prettier interface). But there’s one area where the Samsung i8910 HD comes out as the easy winner: the camera. The HTC Magic makes do with 3 megapixels, and the Nokia N97 tops that by having a 5MP camera. However, the Samsung i8910 HD trumps both, as it not only has an 8MP stills camera, but it’s the first phone in the world to be able to record true, 720p HD video. Neither of the other phones can match that. So, we have three very different phones: the HTC Magic with its Android Marketplace; the Nokia N97 with its keyboard; and the Samsung i8910 HD with its phenomenal stills AND video camera. They’re aiming for different users, but the truth, all three are utterly brilliant…

Recipes are usually in high demand because of low drop rates and limited Vendor supplies. You will likely find recipes in the Trade Channel, usually it is because a player needs gold quickly. Once you know the median price, then you can make a counter-offer for less than the median price. If they say no, then just make sure to leave your offer on the table in case they change their mind. If the item is already listed then wait a bit for them to sell and then place yours for auction to make a bit more profit.

The evolution of off-road motorcycles, commonly called dirt bikes, is a long and complicated story. The first motorcycles were actually nothing more than modified bicycles with attached gasoline engines. These powered bicycles were amazing inventions in their day. Unreliable, but amazing methods of transportation, these motorcycles began captivating people across the globe. Since paved streets were not quite the norm at the time, motorcycles generally could be considered dirt bikes right from the start. No single person or company has been credited with the invention of the dirt bike. Off-road motorcycling is really an evolution of many years, with better tires, better suspension and seats, stronger frames, and better control features being credited to many individuals who were essentially modifying their own bikes for better off-road use. Triumph motorcycles did however design a motorcycle specifically built for dirt riding in 1914, although this model is not actually credited with being the first dirt bike.

Motocross racing seems to have had it origins in Europe, very possibly France with these early motorcycles being raced through wooded trails or racing to the top of a mountainous road for publicity. Many of these early races were not races of speed but races against time where riders simply competed against each other on an individual basis. Racing expanded as did the production of motorcycles to include scrambles and cross country events which excited and entertained spectators. Incidentally, the word motocross was derived from the words motorcycle and cross-country. The races would eventually be moved to a shorter, closed track for easier viewing by the spectators and better monitoring of the racers themselves. With the world at war and the Great Depression, off-road motorcycles may not have been a priority concept with people for many years but the interest in dirt racing wasn’t about to go away. Then Soichiro Honda came along in 1946 with his idea to produce cheap transportation for people after the second world war. Honda became the most predominant name in motorcycles and dirt bikes in particular, undoubtedly due to the fact that they are the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. They were joined by other manufacturers over the years who would eventually become household names as well. Suzuki produced their first motorcycle in 1954, Yamaha in 1955, and Kawasaki in 1960. Although dirt bikes were still far in the future for the big four, this was the beginning of the onslaught of a motorsport unlike any other. Dirt bikes and dirt bike racing would eventually become one of the most popular motorsports in the world.

After a mix of both two stroke and four stroke motors in various models through the years, Honda finally designs and builds a competitive two stroke motocross motor in 1972. It reached the USA in 1973 and is called the Elsinore CR250. It immediately becomes the fastest production off-road race bike in its class and placed Honda alone at the top of the heap in regard to motocross racing. In the 1970’s, motocross racing would finally do what motorcycle manufacturers hoped it would. Off-road motorcycling would become a recreational activity not unlike bicycling with its popularity exploding among the general public. The big four Japanese manufacturers would eventually produce a full product line of dirt bikes in a variety of sizes for various racing classes and ages. Children’s dirt bikes would become available for those early starters and dual-use motorcycles would also become available with dirt tires and suspension along with street-legal features. Other manufacturers also joined the specialized dirt bike market including Maico, Gas Gas, and KTM.

To this day, dirt bikes continue their evolution with almost constant improvement in weight reduction, suspension, engine reliability, and overall performance. They are used as weekend recreational vehicles by millions of people around the world. The world of motocross racing has become more popular than ever before thanks to dirt bike riding basically evolving into an art form. Freestyle riding and stunt riding are captivating more young riders every year and the manufacturers continue to respond by producing high quality, cutting edge dirt bikes.
